Survey: Almost half of all employers use social networking sites to research job candidates

Check those privacy settings! A new CareerBuilder survey out yesterday reports 45 percent of employers use Web sites like Facebook, LinkedIn and MySpace to do a little digging on their potential employees. That’s a huge jump from the 22 percent who responded similarly in 2008. And 11 percent of employers who don’t screen online say they plan to start.

No surprises here: Of the 2,600 hiring managers surveyed, those in the Information Technology field were most likely to conduct online searches, followed by those in Professional and Business Services.

And the No. 1 reason jobseekers were turned down after an e-background check? The posting of “inappropriate photos or information.” Drinking and drugs ranked second.

Do you believe you’ve lost a job opportunity because of your racy Web life? We’d like to hear about it, so leave a comment or drop us a line!
